Field Trip to BASF Coatings – reddot design award winner 2012

“A world full of colors! The Coatings Division of the BASF Group develops, produces and markets a high-quality range of innovative automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinishes, industrial coatings and decorative paints.”

The field trip will take place on Friday, May 24th, at BASF Coatings, one branch of BASF, the world’s leading chemical company. With 10,000 employees worldwide and 2,300 in Münster, BASF Coatings is one of the largest producers of paints and coatings in the world.

We will visit the state-of-the-art production areas, enjoy presentations about BASF’s award-winning human resource work and engage in lively dialogue between scientists and practitioners.

Discussing innovative and sustainable HR concepts

BASF’s human resource concept relies on the implementation and ongoing reflection and evaluation of innovative concepts and sustainable strategies.

One highly interesting area at BASF Coatings is their Idea Management concept that has been designed to turn employees into active partners of the company and lead towards lasting success for teams as well as individual employees.

Once an idea is born, the employee presents it to the idea management leaders who evaluate the feasibility and pass it on to the management level. The employee receives feedback as promptly as possible, remains responsible for his/ her idea and stays involved in the whole implementation process. The company strongly relies on their employees’ competence as they are the experts in their respective field.

Out of the 2,000 ideas that are submitted each year, about 1,200 are implemented and a bonus payment is awarded for each successful idea. The company states that the profits stemming from employees’ ideas add up to about one million Euros a year and roughly a quarter to half a million Euros are being passed on as bonuses for the idea creators every year.

The company names the success of their idea management program a “reflection of the corporate culture” and a “medium to lead employees onto an individual success route”.

Further topics of discussion will be BASF’s successful HR strategies to prepare for demographic changes, their recruitment of high potentials from abroad, their action learning program and their early implementation of self-managing teams with internal short- and long-term goal agreements, cooperative leadership and a creative company-wide award system for participation in groups and the resulting rise in efficiency and employee satisfaction and success.
