MUD 2-RELATED QUESTIONS
ERIKHow long has Mud2 been around for now?
RICHARDI started the design in about 1984 and began the programming in 1985
ERIKWhat are your views on pk's?
RICHARDThey're necessary in small numbers.
ERIKWhich players have influenced you the most in Mud2?
RICHARDInfluenced in what way?
ERIKYour general outlook on the game, the way it was designed, your
feelings toward other players and things like that.
RICHARDDesign has been influenced in small ways by many players, who have
made suggestions (good and bad) over the years. My feelings towards
players as a whole has not been influenced by individual players. My
general outlook on the game hasn't, either, except in the sense that
I had in mind a number of things I wanted to be in the game and a
culture within the game that were meant to make the game open up
horizons for the players I was hoping I'd get.
ERIKWhat item do you like the best and why? (Doesn't have to be
treasure, but can be)
RICHARDValetant, he was fun to program.
ERIKAnd your favourite mobile, and why?
RICHARDI used to like goblin10 because of his ability to lull high-level
characters into a false sense of security every once in a while, but
with the giant realm stuff his efficacy in this regard has
diminished. I like the giant snake quite a bit, because it's SO easy
to walk into his room by accident while unprepared. I guess my
favourite has to be the goat, though. He just doesn't care whether
he's going to win or not, so long as he spoils your reset for you.
ERIKHow long do you think it'd take you to make wiz again (Apart from
cheating by just doting 204k onto a new persona )?
RICHARDIf I was doing it from scratch with an incognito persona who had to
remain incognito, I'd say about a year. Otherwise, 3 or 4 months,
PKs willing.
ERIKCan you remember a funny thing that a player (yourself included if
you want) has done that sticks out in your mind?
RICHARDI like the original cliffy (http://www.mud.co.uk/muse/cliffy.htm),
which was mine, and I like DEXTRUS's stick man tactic
(http://www.mud.co.uk/muse/stick_man_woman.htm). They're both
amusing to watch in action.
ERIKAre there any add-ons due for the land, and if so what sort of
things can we expect?
RICHARDNot at the moment, no, although we will need some more if we start
getting 50 players per reset all the time (ha!). I do have some more
plans, but remember that UMBRARG is now doing the day to day
maintenance for MUD2 and he may prefer to convert some of his quests
to be permanent fixtures rather than to implement my stuff.
ERIKHave you tried any other mud's, and if so which ones and what did
you think of them compared to mud2?
RICHARDI rarely ever play more than one session on any other MUDs, and I
usually only ever do that because someone has told me to try them
out. Most are utter garbage, which is rather sad, but there are some
excellent ones out there. I don't play them for fun, just to keep me
informed of the way these games are going (which is quite often in
the wrong direction as far as I'm concerned!).
ERIKAs the game's creator, do you think you get the same buzz from
playing as other people?
RICHARDNo, I don't get the same buzz. There is absolutely no chance of my
getting any sense of wonder from the game itself, I can only be
surprised by the players.
NON MUD 2-RELATED QUESTIONS
ERIKIf you could do anything else in the world for a living, what would
it be and why?
RICHARDWriting. I like doing it!
ERIKWhat things do you enjoy doing (like hobbies and stuff)?
RICHARDOther than writing... Let's see, I enjoy reading, playing games
(computer and non-computer), designing games (likewise), visiting
new places. A couple of things I used to do a lot I can't do now
because I have kids, like painting lead figures, watching films and
visiting museums and galleries. Then again, I enjoy playing with my
children, except when they have the Barbies out...
ERIKDo you like sport, and if so do you have a favourite sports
person/team?
RICHARDI like watching football, yes, although I don't get to go to live
matches. My favourite team, well, when I was a kid I used to support
Manchester City, but that stopped when they were relegated from the
first division. Nowadays I favour a couple of teams, but not really
ardently - I like to see Leeds and Newcastle win, but don't get
annoyed if they don't (well, unless it's to Manchester United). I
also tend to follow the careers of individual players, although that
doesn't seem to help them (poor old Matthew Le Tissier!).
ERIKWell you're welcome to come and watch Tranmere with me and my mates
any time you like :0)
RICHARDAnd thereby increase the home support by 20%?
ERIK(Please don't ask Tranmere who?.....please don't ask Tranmere
who?.....please don't ask Tranmere who?..)
RICHARDTranmere Rovers, the "other" Merseyside team.
ERIKWhat music do you like to listen to?
RICHARDClassical, excluding opera.
ERIKWho is your favourite composer?
RICHARDDvorak. He's got the best melodies. Sibelius is better in places,
but his pieces usually have some dismal bits in them, too. There are
some individual compositions that I like by composers I don't like
much else of, too.
ERIKWhat (if any) other games do you play online?
RICHARDI don't.
ERIKWhat about offline? Duke Nukem perhaps <grin>?
RICHARDI play Civilisation 2 a lot, although at the moment I'm working my
way through Heroes of Might & Magic III.
ERIKWhat is the desktop wallpaper on your computer at the moment (if
any)?
RICHARDI don't use wallpaper, it takes too long to redraw the stuff. I go
for plain colours (I use a green scheme).
ERIKAnd finally, will you buy me a pint at the next mudmeet ?
RICHARDOnly if it's a pint of water.
